Read moreClean water, sanitation, the circular economy and affordable and clean energy for all are within reach. Sulzer plays a key role in many of these areas, pioneering solutions that use technical innovation to solve some of the pressing issues society faces today.
For more than 185 years, Sulzer has created new markets by introducing innovative technologies tackling societal challenges. Today, we are leading the way in fields such as biopolymers, textile and plastic recycling, wastewater treatment and highly efficient equipment for the energy market.
We are making strides towards enabling a circular textile industry. Sulzer and H&M control the UK-based solvent technology company Worn Again, for which our Chemtech business is a core process partner. Together, the teams are developing a unique textile recycling technology to convert garments at their end of use back into virgin-like raw materials which can be re-used to make new clothes, reducing textile waste and thus solving one of society’s most pressing environmental issues.
Sulzer continues to build on its leadership position in biopolymers and in plastic recycling technologies. We lead the way not only in bio-based, bio-degradable plastics, but also in novel solutions for recycling non bio-based plastics. With the introduction of two new R&D facilities in Switzerland, we are taking the next step to support the scale-up and commercialization of these unique solutions.
We enable the efficient and uninterrupted supply of water to people in need with our best-in-class pumping solutions. Our equipment is at the heart of ambitious infrastructure bringing fresh water to millions of people, from Brazil to the Persian Gulf.
Sulzer’s solutions are not only energy-efficient but also smart. Atlantica, a global renewable energy player with sustainable infrastructure assets all over the world, is using our artificial intelligence enabled, advanced data analytics platform BLUE BOX™ to run their solar power plants. Sulzer’s award-winning BLUE BOX, initially developed for pumps, makes sure Atlantica’s solar plants are managed efficiently and that anomalies are detected early-on, helping to prevent the emission of 665’000 tons of CO2 every year.
We bring unique solutions to the planet’s sustainability challenge, through a technical innovation engine which has demonstrated its own sustainability, over Sulzer’s 185 years of existence. Sulzer, your partner for Sustainable Innovation.
Letter to the shareholders
Last year at this point in time, when the world turned its eyes to China battling a novel virus, we wrote that it was still too early to assess the impact of COVID-19 on Sulzer, anticipating that it would very likely burden us beyond our China business. Soon after, the coronavirus found its way across continents and country borders, challenging our private and professional lives. Thanks to our rapid response, our global network, Sulzer’s geographical and industrial diversification, and dedicated employees who went above and beyond the call of duty to continue to support customers under the strictest safety regulations, we were able to mitigate to a large extent the impact of the pandemic on our business.
